The City of Roses attracted artists and burnt-out city dwellers looking for an easier (and more enjoyable) life.īut word spread fast and over time the Portland’s reputation grew (and with it the population). The running joke with Portland in the 90’s was that this was the place 30-year-olds came to retire. Hate to take it down a notch, but let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room - Portland and Austin are alike in that neither city is affordable. Some folks don’t realize that the “Keep Portland Weird” motto came from Austin, but it’s true. Whereas in Austin a lot of folks move for employment assuming the entire city is liberal, only to realize there’s a constant battle between the liberal city and Republican-heavy state government. As mentioned earlier, Portland is in a liberal bubble, all of the neighboring cities are politically aligned so being liberal is the norm. Austin is liberal first, employed second. For starters, Austin attracts more professional (read: “normal”) folks than Portland due to industry and location – lest you forget, Texas is part of the Bible Belt.Īs such, PDX has slightly weirder folks by virtue and a more homogeneous liberal culture supported by local and state politics. It’s easy to feel relaxed and light-hearted in both places, but there are (Very slight) variations in the overall vibe. One of the most glaring similarities between Portland and Austin is the easy-going vibe of both cities. Likewise in Multnomah County (Portland’s County), 79.2% of residents voted Democrat. In the last presidential election 71.4% of Travis County residents (Austin’s County) voted Democrat. In terms of landmass, Austin is almost double the size of Portland largely due to urban sprawl (which I’ll cover shortly). As of 2020, the population of Portland is 650,000 while the population of Austin is 966,000. Population-wise, Austin, Texas is twice as big as Portland, Oregon. We couldn’t do Bridal Veil falls due to the loss of 15+ minutes due to road construction. ![]() our tour was 3 hours and I did feel pressed for time. By the time we got to Multnomah, the light was not great for photos. (Multnomah is busy so easier to buy here.) -We did the morning tour in early June. Offers magnets, post cards, and pressed pennies of Vista House and for Multnomah Falls. It has a gift shop in the basement that is adorable. Now comments for those considering a visit to this road and its falls: -Vista House is only open on select days for select hours, so plan ahead. We had a few minutes to shop at a couple of the stops. The company offers bottled water and snacks but we had brought our own. He didn’t do the uphill trek for the other because (1) the path was very easy to see (paved walkway) and (2) he needed to manage the parking situation, as there was no parking there. Our guide led us to Latourell Falls himself, and awakens Falls too, which was good for me because I can easily get lost. This tour did just that! We met at a convenient spot and our tour guide handled the driving and parking! He also shared stories along the way and managed the unexpected road work well. Chose tour in order to dodge hassle with parking and driving, to let me be able to see the sights along the road and at stops. Chose this company for the convenient pick-up location and venue. ![]()
